  50. The source is written in GFA-Basic and saved as ASCII (SAVEA-Option).
  51. There are two possible options used in GFA-Basic:
  52. 1) SAVE:  the source is saved in a tokenised form, which is shorter
  53.           than the pure ASCII-source. Loading is faster too.
  54.           (load with LOAD-option)
  55. 2) SAVEA: ASCII-source. Used to save blocks and procedures.
  56.           (load with MERGE-option)
  57.  
  58. In Germany, GFA-Basic is distributed in three different versions:
  59. GFA-Basic 2.02 Development-Kit (about 50.- DM):
  60.     Old version (uses .LST and .BAS as extension). No GEM-functions.
  61.  
  62. GFA-Basic 3.0 Development-Kit  (about 200.- DM)
  63.     GEM-functions included, Turbo C-functions supported (see manual).
  64.  
  65. GFA_Basic 3.5 Development-Kit  (about 300.- DM)
  66.     Like version 3.0 with additional matrix-functions and features.

  68. I don't know exactly, but I think that there's a distributor for

  127. Again one of these boring comparisons with amiga's 500. Maybe when it
  128. goes for playing games the amiga is better. But when you experiment
  129. with minix, use the st as a terminal (there are great terminal
  130. emulation programs) or other serious things you don't need the extra
  131. features of the Amiga 500, which only are in the way and slow down the
  132. 68000.

  180.         In what way do the chips get in the way. If you are using an amiga
  181. for these simple things then the custom wont be stealing cycles.  The only
  182. thing i can imagine you are thinking of is the fact that the amigas architecture
  183. means that the 68000 can only do memory access on even cycles - stretching
  184. very few instructions by one cycle.

  186.         The advantage the st has is 8MHz vs 7.1509MHz, along with a lot
  187. simpler operating system and easier integration into a pc world (your dos
  188. format disks).

  301. I am sure I have mentioned this before-- The TT does not have a 16MHz bus.
  302. (nor does it have a 32MHZ bus, either) The 68030 in the TT are reading from
  303. TT-Fastram in the burst-modus, which is as fast as it can be. The SCSI
  304.  controller
  305. writes to memory with 1 or 2 (or more..) waitstates, but this is not important.

  307. main thing is that the controller is capable to cope with even the fastest
  308.  diskdrives.

  330. This is not correct -- the memory subsystem of the TT only runs at 16MHz.
  331. The chips all run at 32MHz, but memory is still half the speed. TT RAM is
  332. faster because you don't have any contention with the video shifter (which
  333. requires bus access to ST RAM to generate the video display).
  334.  
  335. However, since the 68030 burst-fills its caches, you do minimise the impact
  336. of the slower memory.
  337.  
  338. As to the slowness of the paging -- you can fix this by buying more memory.
  339. I know someone who uses a TT under Unix every day as his personal X
  340. workstation and he suggests that 8MB RAM is a minimum configuration.

  375. I have dbman for years. While it is not as elegant as dbaseIII plus as
  376. far as ASSIST, help and form creation are concerned, it does work well
  377. and fast. You can use it in dbman or dbase compatible file mode; the
  378. former is claimed to be faster. I have done a number of "dbase" contracts
  379. on my ST using dbman and the customers have all been happy with the
  380. results. dbman only uses 640x400 pixels on my 1280x960 TTM195.

  382. Now if you want a database that is pure fun to use as well as capable
  383. try Superbase Professional (not sure if it is still on the market). You
  384. can mix text and graphics for a great database!!!

  501. You could try setting the unixmode environment variable, then re-extract
  502. (most zoo's are unixmode aware) and redump.  You're shell doesn't need
  503. to be unixmode aware to run unixmode programs.  Lets see, a good setting
  504. for what you want to do would be

  555. Is there a filter that maps the Atari character set (as best as
  556. possible) to the standard ISO-Latin 1 character set?  I'm sure that
  557. someone must have already done this.  For the moment I use to
  558. following shell script on my Unix box which filters atari characters
  559. for our PostScript printers.  It handles a reasonable portion of
  560. German and French specifc characters that I encounter.

  644. pack too many Files into the Archiv but it works ,if you know this, quite well
  645. ! I can't post it into comp.sys.atari.st.binary ro an other Area, because i'am
